Tulum, the archaeological site of a Mayan seaside walled city, is located in the Yucatan Peninsula in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The city, which overlooks the Caribbean Sea, was a very important trading port before the Spanish came to the area. Maya were well protected in the city by a wall and inaccessible sea cliffs.
