How to make money on a Greek island (and probably on other islands around the world)

What I am about to tell you is based not only on abstract knowledge, but also on my personal observations, since I have visited many Greek islands, some of them several times. In fact, the Greek islands are one of my favourite destinations, especially when it comes to swimming.

So, what can someone do in order to earn money on a Greek island? What kind of business could he or she start there?

Transportation Services

An obvious type of business that someone could establish on a Greek island is a transportation service. Although there is usually some form of public transportation, anyone who wants to enjoy the best beaches of the island and visit its sights at their own pace will certainly appreciate the convenience of having a private car and driver. This is especially true for families and large groups. A transportation company could offer airport and port transfers, private drivers, minivan services, wedding transportation, and customised excursions.

Private Tour Guide

The previous business can easily be combined with private tours, since every Greek island is unique and has numerous places worth exploring. For this type of business, you would need multilingual personnel, excellent knowledge of the island, and familiarity with its hidden beaches, historical sites, villages, restaurants, and other attractions. Private tours could also be combined with transportation, creating a more complete and profitable service.

Yacht and Boat Charters

Many Greek islands are surrounded by other beautiful islands and smaller, less accessible beaches. For example, the magnificent volcanic scenery of Santorini, combined with its proximity to other destinations such as Ios, could make the island an attractive location for a boat-charter business.

A company does not necessarily have to own a large fleet. It could also operate as a booking and charter-management company, connecting visitors with boat owners and taking a commission.

This type of business primarily targets customers who are willing to pay for comfort, privacy, and luxury.

Wedding Planning

Since Greece is an extremely popular destination for weddings, particularly among international couples, a wedding-planning business on a Greek island could be a clever idea.

Such a company could organise the entire event, including the venue, catering, photography, music, decoration, transportation, accommodation, and entertainment.

This also creates opportunities for DJs, musicians, photographers, chefs, waiters, florists, decorators, drivers, and other professionals.

Construction and Renovation of Hotels and Other Buildings

The extended tourist season, the increasing number of visitors, and the harsh environment of a Cycladic island all take their toll on buildings. As a result, many hotels, villas, restaurants, and other properties require regular maintenance and renovation.

This creates opportunities for civil engineers, architects, builders, electricians, plumbers, painters, air-conditioning technicians, pool-maintenance companies, and other specialised professionals.

In fact, this could be one of the more interesting opportunities because such businesses can generate income outside the main tourist season as well.

Villa and Holiday-Rental Management

Another potentially profitable business is the management of villas, holiday homes, and short-term rental properties.

Many property owners live in Athens or abroad and need somebody locally to take care of their properties. A management company could handle check-ins and check-outs, cleaning, maintenance, guest communication, emergency situations, and coordination with other service providers.

This business could also be combined with transportation and concierge services.

Concierge Services

A premium concierge business could provide visitors with almost everything they need during their stay.

For example, a customer might ask you to arrange a private chef, a boat trip, a restaurant reservation, a rental car, a photographer, a babysitter, a massage, or transportation to a remote beach.

The advantage of this model is that you do not necessarily need to own all the services yourself. Instead, you can establish relationships with local businesses and independent professionals and earn money through commissions or service fees.

Boat Excursions and Fishing Trips

A business could also organise organised boat excursions to secluded beaches, nearby islands, caves, and other attractions.

Specialised excursions could include sunset cruises, fishing trips, snorkelling excursions, diving trips, and private day cruises.

Again, owning the boat is not necessarily essential. A company could cooperate with local boat owners and concentrate on marketing, bookings, customer service, and organisation.

Diving, Snorkelling and Water Sports

The sea is one of the biggest attractions of the Greek islands, so businesses connected with the water can have considerable potential.

Depending on the island, possibilities include diving schools, snorkelling excursions, paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing lessons, and other water-based activities.

The main challenge is that these businesses are highly seasonal and may require specialised equipment and qualified personnel.

Private Chef and Catering Services

A growing number of visitors choose villas and private accommodation rather than hotels. These customers may be interested in having a chef prepare meals at their accommodation.

A catering company could provide private dinners, wedding catering, breakfasts, parties, and special events.

This could also be combined with local food experiences, such as wine tastings, cooking classes, or traditional Greek dinners.

Photography and Videography

The Greek islands provide a spectacular setting for photography. A professional photographer could specialise in weddings, engagements, proposals, family holidays, luxury-property photography, and social-media content.

Drone photography and video production could provide additional services, subject to the applicable regulations.

Property Maintenance

An island with hundreds or thousands of holiday homes needs people who can keep those properties functioning.

A company could provide cleaning, gardening, swimming-pool maintenance, air-conditioning maintenance, plumbing, electrical work, painting, pest control, and general repairs.

This is not as glamorous as opening a beach bar, but it has one major advantage: people need these services regardless of whether they are on holiday.

Laundry and Linen Services

When I am on holiday for a longer period of time, I always appreciate having access to a good laundry service. I am sure this is the case for many travellers around the world, particularly those staying for several weeks.

Moreover, a professional laundry and linen-rental company could serve multiple hotels, villas, and other accommodation providers, rather than depending solely on individual tourists. This would provide a more stable source of income and could also help the business remain active outside the peak tourist season.

Staff Accommodation and Recruitment

Tourism businesses on islands often need large numbers of seasonal workers. This creates an opportunity for businesses that can help hotels, restaurants, and other companies recruit, transport, and accommodate seasonal employees.

A company could potentially combine recruitment services with staff housing and transportation.

Digital Marketing for Tourism Businesses

Many small hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and other tourism businesses need help with websites, social media, photography, online advertising, and reputation management.

A specialised digital-marketing agency could work with several businesses simultaneously and therefore avoid depending on a single tourist season.

Solar Energy and Energy-Efficiency Services

Greek islands receive abundant sunshine, while hotels and villas consume substantial amounts of electricity, particularly for air conditioning and water heating.

Businesses specialising in solar installations, energy-efficiency improvements, insulation, heat pumps, and related services could benefit from both tourism-related demand and the need to reduce operating costs.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Island

However, the type of business that makes sense depends heavily on the island.

Santorini and Mykonos, for example, are particularly associated with luxury tourism, weddings, private tours, yachts, and premium services. Larger islands such as Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu have much larger populations and tourism markets, while islands such as Naxos, Paros, and Ios have their own distinctive customer bases and tourism profiles.

Therefore, someone should not simply ask, “What business can I start on a Greek island?”

A better question would be:

“What problem exists on this particular island, and how can I solve it profitably?”

The Problems of Doing Business in Greece

Nonetheless, anyone who decides to establish a business on a Greek island, or even to work there, should take into consideration that Greece can be a challenging environment for starting and operating a business.

Bureaucracy, taxation, administrative procedures, and the seasonal nature of tourism can all create difficulties for entrepreneurs.

There is also the problem of seasonality. A business that is extremely profitable in July and August may have very little work during the winter. This is why businesses serving hotels, property owners, and other local companies can sometimes be more attractive than businesses that depend exclusively on tourists.

The Opportunity

Although these difficulties can deter many people, it is also absolutely true that many others make a decent living, and some even operate highly profitable businesses, on the Greek islands.

A lot of them started with a simple idea that worked because they were in the right place at the right time and, more importantly, because they put in the necessary effort to make it successful.

In my opinion, the most interesting opportunities are not necessarily the most glamorous ones. Another beach bar, restaurant, or souvenir shop may face enormous competition. On the other hand, a company that provides transportation, maintenance, property management, cleaning, construction, digital services, or specialised experiences may solve a genuine problem for both tourists and local businesses.

Ultimately, the best business idea may be something relatively simple: identify a problem that exists on the island, provide a reliable solution, and build a reputation for being the person or company that gets things done.
